Cats, presidents and cartoon ogres have all taken the mic this month. Here is where it came from, which apps make it and what each one costs.

Every clip follows the same frame. Two performers stand in a flat orange room, a single microphone hangs between them, and they trade verses over the same beat. However, the cast changes every time.

According to XXL, the software swaps in the new faces and keeps the hand moves, lip sync and audio lined up. As a result, a finished video takes minutes rather than an afternoon of editing. That low effort is exactly why the format keeps spreading.

First of all, the source is real. In June 2022, Quavo and the late Takeoff performed “Hotel Lobby” as Unc & Phew on A COLORS SHOW, the YouTube series known for its single-colour studio. The orange booth is the backdrop every remake copies.

However, the clip never really went away. Starrd notes that COLORS reposted it in April 2025, October 2025 and June 2026, and the sound now sits under more than 428,000 TikTok videos. Then, in early September 2026, a TikTok of two cats rapping the routine went viral. After that, the AI versions took over.

Meanwhile, the cast list keeps growing. XXL counted Barack Obama and Joe Biden trading bars, plus Walter White and Jesse Pinkman from Breaking Bad. The Tab added Shrek, Erling Haaland, Spider-Man, and Thor with Captain America.

Celebrities are joining too. On September 24, Russell Simmons posted a Hotel Lobby clip of himself and Kimora Lee Simmons, Complex reported. It arrived four days after her Lifetime documentary premiered, so the post drew far more attention than a typical remake. Even so, most versions stay light: two friends, a pet or a pair of cartoon heroes.
