Alexa Plus Free for Prime Members: What Amazon Just Included

As of September 1, 2026, Alexa Plus free for Prime members is the deal in the United States. Amazon finished its national rollout and folded its agentic assistant into Prime at no extra charge. Everyone else pays $19.99 a month. That single decision turns a paid AI subscription into a benefit tens of millions of households already own.

There is no catch on price. Amazon has made Alexa Plus free for Prime members as part of the completed US rollout, and the access covers the entire household rather than one account.

The catch, if you want to call it one, is that Prime itself is the paywall. However, if you already pay for Prime, nothing new appears on your bill. If you do not, a 30-day Prime free trial switches Alexa Plus on the same day, and Prime at $14.99 a month still costs less than the $19.99 standalone plan. Non-members can also try a free text-only chat at Alexa.com or in the app, though Amazon limits that version by usage.

Worth knowing before you go looking: this is the assistant, not the old hardware. Searches for Echo Plus still surface a discontinued speaker, and the ARRI Alexa is a cinema camera entirely. Alexa Plus is the software layer, and it arrives on devices you already own.

Alexa Plus is Amazon’s rebuilt, agentic version of the assistant. Instead of answering one command at a time, it holds context and acts on your behalf.

According to Amazon, it can research complex topics, keep a conversation going across several days, order takeout, find a restaurant and book the table, hail a ride, and schedule services such as home repairs. In addition, it drives smart home gear, including Ring cameras.

The behavioural shift is the part Amazon keeps pointing at. Customers interact with Alexa Plus more than twice as much as they did with the legacy assistant.

Three tiers exist, and the difference between them is access rather than intelligence. Here is how they compare.

Notice that the paid and the free-with-Prime tiers are identical in features. Amazon is not holding capability back from Prime members, so the $19.99 is purely the price of not having Prime. Put differently, Prime is the cheaper way to buy Alexa Plus, and it starts with a free month.

Alexa Plus is not locked to one gadget. It runs on Alexa-enabled devices, on Alexa.com in a browser, and in the Alexa app.

Amazon also added it at no extra cost to compatible Fire TV devices, announced on August 19, 2026. As a result, the assistant follows you from the kitchen speaker to the television to your phone without a second subscription.

Alexa Plus runs on almost every Echo made since 2018. The exceptions are the first-generation Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Plus, Echo Spot and the first two Echo Show models, which stay on the old assistant. If none of that is in your house, the entry ticket is cheap. Here are the four devices that get you the full assistant for the least money, at Amazon list price.

Prices move around Amazon sale events, so treat the column as a ceiling. The Echo Dot goes on sale most often. Whichever you pick, the assistant itself costs nothing extra as long as the Prime membership is active.

The numbers explain the giveaway. Shoppers who tried Alexa Plus went on to sign up for Prime at a nearly 25% higher rate, according to an Amazon earnings release. Amazon frames the assistant as a Prime benefit rather than a product line.

Meanwhile, Prime membership grew by double digits year over year in the second quarter of 2026, and revenue from subscription services rose 12% to $13.7 billion. “Prime remains a key pillar of our business,” Amazon finance chief Brian Olsavsky told analysts on the July earnings call.

Therefore the logic is straightforward. Alexa Plus is cheaper to Amazon as a reason to join Prime than as a product people buy on its own.

There is a second payoff that does not show up on an invoice. An assistant that books rides and reorders groceries sits closer to a purchase than a speaker that sets timers. Consequently, every extra conversation is a chance to keep the transaction inside Amazon rather than losing it to a browser tab.

This was a slow launch by design. Alexa Plus reached more than 100,000 people in the weeks after its initial release earlier in 2026.

After that, Amazon ran a long early access period that drew what the company describes as tens of millions of participants. Only once that testing wound down did the assistant go wide and become a Prime benefit.

That order matters. Voice assistants fail loudly and in public, so shipping an agentic one to a hundred million homes on day one would have been a risk. Instead, Amazon spent the year collecting real household usage before it attached the assistant to its most valuable subscription.

Bundling changes the competitive question. Rivals now have to argue their assistant is worth a separate bill, while Amazon’s arrives inside something people already renew.

Apple took the opposite route and rebuilt Siri AI on Google Gemini rather than charging for it. Google, by contrast, has been tightening what its paid tiers include. As a result, the assistant market is splitting between bundled and metered, and Amazon just planted its flag firmly on the bundled side.
