Google retired the name in July, yet 269,000 Americans a month still search for it. This NotebookLM review tests what the renamed app does now.

This NotebookLM review starts with a naming problem. On 16 July 2026, Google renamed the app Gemini Notebook. However, most people still type the old name. So this guide uses both.

The idea behind the product has not changed. You upload your own sources, and the AI answers only from them. In addition, it can turn those sources into podcasts, videos, slides and quizzes.

Therefore the testing behind this NotebookLM review followed three questions. First, what is free? Second, what do the paid Google AI plans add? Finally, how far can you trust the answers?

What Is NotebookLM?

So, what is NotebookLM? It is an AI research notebook from Google. You create a notebook, add documents, and then ask questions about them. Every answer points back to the passage it came from.

That design is the main difference from a normal chatbot. A chatbot draws on everything it learned in training. NotebookLM, in contrast, stays inside the files you gave it. As a result, it invents far less.

The project began in May 2023 as Project Tailwind. LM stood for language model. Today the old web address redirects to the new one, and Google calls the product Gemini Notebook. Some people also search for it as Google NotebookLM, Notebook LM or Gemini NotebookLM.

Who Is NotebookLM For?

What is NotebookLM used for? Mostly study and research. For example, students load lecture notes and get a quiz. Similarly, analysts load reports and ask for the numbers that changed.

It also suits writers, teachers and teams with long manuals. On the other hand, it is a poor fit if you want open web answers or creative writing. It also needs a Google account.

How Does NotebookLM Work?

How does NotebookLM work for beginners? In three steps. First, you create a notebook. Then you add sources. Finally, you chat with them or open the Studio panel to generate an output. Below are the four parts that shape daily use.

Sources and Grounded Chat: What This NotebookLM Review Tested First

Sources are the heart of the product. You can add PDFs, text files, Google Docs, Google Slides, web pages and YouTube videos. According to Google’s help pages, one source can hold 500,000 words or 200MB.

Then you ask questions in plain English. The answer cites the exact passages it used. In addition, you can limit a question to a few selected sources. If the answer is not in your files, the app usually says so.

Audio Overviews and Video Overviews

Audio Overviews made the app famous. The feature turns your sources into a podcast-style talk between two AI hosts. Since December 2024, you can also join the conversation and ask the hosts a question.

Video Overviews followed in 2025. They build a narrated, slide-style video with images and diagrams. Moreover, Short Video Overviews arrived in July 2026 as 60-second vertical clips. According to Wikipedia, audio and video overviews support more than 80 languages.

Slide Decks, Infographics and Data Tables

The Studio panel also creates visual outputs. Slide decks and infographics arrived in November 2025. Data tables followed a month later. Each one is built from your sources, so the content stays on topic.

However, heavy outputs take time and use more of your allowance. A Generate later option can queue a big job until your limit resets. Generated images and videos also carry a visible watermark on the free and Plus plans.

Flashcards, Quizzes and Mind Maps for Study

How do you use NotebookLM to study? Load a chapter, and then ask for flashcards or a quiz. The app writes questions from your own material. Similarly, reports and mind maps give you a quick outline of a long text.

For photo-based homework help, a different kind of tool works better. Our Turbo AI review covers one of them. In addition, the AI homework helper collection compares the rest.

NotebookLM Review in Practice: How Good Is It?

Is NotebookLM good in daily use? For reading and study, yes. Citations make it easy to check an answer. In addition, an Audio Overview is a pleasant way to review a dense paper.

However, three weak spots appeared. First, the limits are now hard to predict. Since 2 September 2026, Google counts usage by compute. Your allowance refreshes every five hours until you reach a weekly cap. Longer chats, more sources and heavier outputs drain it faster.

Second, grounded does not mean flawless. The model can still misread a table or merge two sources. So click the citations before you quote anything. Third, Audio Overviews follow one formula. Critics say the hosts flatten every topic into the same friendly chat.

NotebookLM Pricing Review: Is NotebookLM Free?

NotebookLM pricing runs through Google AI plans, because the app has no separate subscription. The limits in this NotebookLM review come from Google’s plans page, read on 11 October 2026. The US prices come from a 9to5Google breakdown dated 25 May 2026, so confirm them at checkout.

Plan Price
Standard (free) 0 dollars: 100 notebooks, 50 sources per notebook
Plus (Google AI Plus) 7.99 dollars a month: 200 notebooks, 100 sources per notebook
Pro (Google AI Pro) 19.99 dollars a month: 500 notebooks, 300 sources per notebook
Ultra 5x (Google AI Ultra) 99.99 dollars a month: 500 notebooks, 500 sources per notebook
Ultra 20x (Google AI Ultra) 199.99 dollars a month: 500 notebooks, 600 sources per notebook

So is NotebookLM free? Yes. The Standard plan costs nothing, and you sign up with a Gmail account. It includes chat, Audio Overviews and the Studio tools, although with the lowest usage allowance. How much does NotebookLM cost if you upgrade? Plus is the cheapest step, and it doubles the standard allowance. Pro gives four times the standard allowance and removes the visible watermark. Meanwhile, the two Ultra plans give five or twenty times the Pro allowance. Remember that these plans also bundle Gemini, cloud storage and other Google tools. Therefore few people should buy Ultra for the notebook alone.

How Many Sources Can You Add? What This Review Found

How many sources can you add to NotebookLM? On the free plan, 50 per notebook. Plus raises that to 100, and Pro to 300. The two Ultra plans allow 500 and 600.

How many notebooks can you have? The free plan allows 100. Plus allows 200, and every higher plan allows 500. In addition, sharing a notebook does not raise the source limit for your collaborators.

Does NotebookLM have a limit on chat? Yes, but Google no longer publishes one daily number. Instead, the app shows a usage line under the chat box. For the full product history, see Wikipedia’s entry on NotebookLM.

Is NotebookLM Legit and Safe? What This Review Checked

Yes, NotebookLM is legitimate. It is a Google product, and it has left its experimental phase. Google removed that label in October 2024.

Is it safe, then? For most study and work files, yes. Google’s plans page says your data is not used to train the product unless you send feedback. However, feedback is the catch. If you rate an answer, reviewers may see your query, your uploads and the reply.

Work and school accounts get stronger terms. According to the same page, their uploads and chats are not reviewed by humans and are not used for training. Still, check your own company policy before you upload client files.

NotebookLM Review: Alternatives Worth Comparing

NotebookLM vs Gemini

The NotebookLM vs Gemini question comes up most often, and the rename made it more confusing. Gemini is the general assistant. It searches the web, writes and creates media.

The notebook, in contrast, works only with your sources. So use Gemini for open questions and the notebook for a fixed reading list. Both share the same Google AI plans.

NotebookLM vs Consensus

Consensus solves the opposite problem. Instead of reading your files, it searches published papers and summarizes what the studies say. As a result, it helps when you do not have sources yet.

Many researchers use both. First they find papers there, and then they load the PDFs into a notebook. Our Consensus AI review has the details. For drafting the paper itself, Jenni AI adds citations as you write.

NotebookLM vs ChatGPT

ChatGPT can also read uploaded files. In addition, it is stronger at writing and open-ended tasks. However, it mixes your files with its general knowledge.

Therefore the notebook is easier to verify, because each claim links to a passage. For a search-first rival with live web sources, see our Perplexity AI review.

NotebookLM Review Scorecard: Where It Excels and Where It Falls Short

Pros

  • Free plan with 100 notebooks and 50 sources per notebook
  • Answers stay inside your sources and cite the exact passages
  • Audio Overviews and Video Overviews turn dense files into easy reviews
  • Slide decks, infographics, flashcards and quizzes come from the same sources
  • One source can hold 500,000 words or 200MB
  • Individual data is not used for training unless you send feedback

Cons

  • Compute-based limits since September 2026 are hard to predict
  • No standalone subscription, so upgrades mean a full Google AI plan
  • Visible watermark on generated images and videos below the Pro plan
  • Feedback you send can expose queries and uploads to human reviewers
  • Audio Overviews follow one host format for every topic
  • The rename to Gemini Notebook still confuses new users

NotebookLM Review Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Is NotebookLM worth it? On the free plan, easily. Few free tools read 50 sources and then explain them by text, audio and video. For students, it is one of the best study aids available.

However, here is the short answer from this NotebookLM review. Stay on the free plan until the usage line stops you. Then consider Plus or Pro, but only if you also want Gemini and the storage.

Ultimately, the name on the door changed, and the promise did not. The app only knows what you hand it. That limit is exactly why you can trust it more than a chatbot. So the quality of your notebook still depends on the quality of your sources.
