So, what is an AI TV? It is a smart TV with a processor that uses machine learning to adjust the picture and sound while you watch, plus an assistant that answers questions and controls other devices. That is the whole idea. The label is new, and the marketing around it is loud, but the technology under it is easy to explain. This post covers what the AI part really does, what TVs have AI in 2026, and when the badge is worth paying for. If you would rather skip to a recommendation, the set we suggest to most people is the LG C5.

What an AI TV Actually Does

An ordinary smart TV runs apps. An AI TV does that too, and then adds a chip that keeps analyzing the image and the sound. Here is what that chip is busy with.

  • Upscaling. Most of what you watch is not 4K. The processor compares each frame with patterns it learned from millions of images and fills in detail, so cable and older streams look sharper on a big panel.
  • Scene by scene picture tuning. It recognizes faces, skies, grass and text, and then adjusts contrast and color for each part of the frame.
  • Clearer dialogue. The same idea applied to audio. Voices are separated from background noise and lifted, which helps with mumbled shows.
  • An assistant on the screen. Since 2025 the big brands have added chat assistants. You can ask what to watch, search for something you see on screen, or get live translated subtitles.
  • Smart home control. The TV doubles as a hub, so lights, cameras and thermostats show up on the big screen.

In other words, the first three items change how the TV looks and sounds every minute it is on. The last two are extras you may or may not use.

What TVs Have AI in 2026?

Nearly every mid-range and premium model sold today, although each brand uses its own name for it. This table shows where to look.

Brand What they call it What it covers Our test
Samsung Vision AI Upscaling, Click to Search, Live Translate, smart home QN80F review
LG OLED evo AI, QNED evo AI Alpha AI processors, AI Picture Pro, AI Sound Pro, Copilot in webOS C5 review
Sony XR processor Picture and sound analysis, Google TV with Gemini n/a
TCL AiPQ processor Picture tuning, Google TV with Gemini n/a
Hisense Hi-View AI Engine Picture and sound tuning, Google TV or VIDAA n/a

Which TV brand has AI, then? All five. What differs is how much of it you notice. Samsung puts Vision AI on almost its whole 2025 and 2026 range, from the budget QLED line up to Neo QLED and OLED. Meanwhile LG writes AI into the model name itself, as in OLED evo AI C5. We tested seven of these sets for our best AI smart TV ranking.

Which AI TV Is Best?

For picture quality, LG. Its Alpha processors sit behind self-lit OLED panels, so the AI has a perfect black level to work with, and the LG G5 was the brightest OLED we measured. For most living rooms the LG C5 gives nearly the same picture for less.

For the longest feature list, Samsung. Vision AI adds on-screen search and live translation, and the QN80F pairs it with a Mini-LED panel that handles bright rooms. On a tight budget, the Samsung Q7F brings the same assistant to a $399 set.

However, the processor never fixes a weak panel. A cheap edge-lit screen with an AI badge still shows gray blacks, and that is why our reviews score the panel first and the software second.

Is an AI TV Worth It?

Usually yes, but not because of the badge. You are buying a better processor, and that pays off every time you watch something below 4K. The chat assistant matters less. Many owners try it once and go back to the remote.

Two cautions before you buy. First, AI does not appear on the spec sheet as a number, so compare panel type, brightness and dimming zones instead. Second, a TV that studies what is on screen can also report it. Most sets ship with viewing data collection switched on, and you can turn it off in the privacy settings during setup.

As a result, the practical rule is short. Pick the panel that fits your room, then let the AI be the bonus.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an AI TV in simple terms?

A smart TV with a processor that uses machine learning to sharpen the picture and clean up the sound in real time. Most 2025 and 2026 models also include a voice or chat assistant.

What TVs have AI?

Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL and Hisense all sell them. Samsung calls it Vision AI, LG puts AI in the model name, and Sony, TCL and Hisense build it into their picture processors and Google TV.

Is an AI TV the same as a smart TV?

Not quite. Every AI TV is a smart TV, because it runs apps and connects to the internet. The AI part is the extra processing that analyzes each frame and the assistant on top.

Do AI TV features work without internet?

The picture and sound processing does, because it runs on the chip inside the TV. Assistants, search and live translation need a connection.

Can you turn the AI off on a TV?

Yes. Filmmaker Mode or a similar picture mode switches off most processing, and the assistant and data collection have their own toggles in settings.

Which TV offers the best value with AI features?

In our tests the Samsung Q7F was the cheapest set with a full assistant, and the LG C5 gave the best picture for the money.
