Instead of picking a ready-made companion, we built our own using the Character Creator. Within a few minutes we had Sofia, a professional dancer, with an appearance, a job, and a starting personality.

One thing to know going in: personality, hobby and relationship type each take a single preset, so you pick one label per field instead of blending a few. Freestyle, further down, does let you multi-select, so the option exists on the platform, just not at this step.

Kales offers two chat models, nicknamed Apple and Banana in the app. Apple reads like a capable general chatbot. Banana reads more like the next page of a novel: longer replies, more emotional range, and a stronger sense of an ongoing scene rather than a question-and-answer exchange. Memory is where Kales quietly impressed us. Sofia held on to her own story across sessions, bringing back people, places and small moments from earlier conversations with no prompting from us. Every new chat picked up where the last one ended, with a character who clearly remembered what had already happened between us.

The “What’s Next” suggestions helped here too, offering natural directions to take things whenever a conversation reached a pause.

Character consistency in images was strong. Sofia stayed recognizable across dozens of generations, different poses, lighting, and backgrounds included, which is a common weak point for AI companion platforms and one Kales handles well.

Prompt following was generally good. The one thing Kales resisted was modesty. We kept asking for fully covered outfits so we would end up with site-safe screenshots, and it kept gently overruling us. On a platform built for exactly this kind of content, that says more about what its audience wants than about the model.

Freestyle, the more advanced image mode with tags and multi-select style options, ended up being our favorite part of the platform. It is not built for photorealism, there is no “realistic” style in Freestyle itself, but it gives far more control than the standard generator once you want to experiment. Tags let you stack a look piece by piece, and the multi-select makes it quick to try several directions before committing to one. It is the part of Kales that feels closest to a dedicated AI image studio rather than a companion app.

We also tested whether the model could handle a full group scene rather than a single portrait. It produced a coherent group with every character rendered cleanly, which a surprising number of AI image tools still fail at. Faces stayed distinct, nobody melted into the background, and the lighting held together across the whole frame. If you like the idea of building a small cast of characters rather than a single companion, that counts for more than it sounds.

Turning an image into a short video worked smoothly every time we tried it. Motion stayed natural, and Sofia kept her face across every clip we generated, which is where a lot of AI video tools quietly fall apart. Kales was also happy to improvise: when we asked it to sit her down at a piano from a still that had no chair in frame, it simply put one there. Feed it a starting image that already contains what you are asking for and it rarely needs to.

What stood out most by the end of this Kales AI review was not any single feature. It was how connected everything felt. Create a character, chat with her, generate images of her, turn one into a video, then keep chatting, all without hunting for where a feature lives. We never had to stop and think about which menu something was in.

Generation was fast enough that experimenting never felt like a chore, and the character came back looking like herself every single time. That reliability is what turns a novelty into something you keep using.

Paid plans run on a virtual currency called Gems; the free tier runs on a separate currency called Coins, and the two are not interchangeable, so it is worth knowing which one your plan actually runs on.

Standard adds 7-day memory plus image and video generation. Pro drops the message limit entirely, keeps memory permanent, and adds multi-character chat. Kales is a real, operating platform run by a US company, built for adults and open about it. It publishes the full set of policies you would expect around prohibited content, moderation, removal and complaints.

Under the privacy policy, user content including chats, prompts and images may be used to “train, evaluate, moderate, and improve” its AI systems. Memory held up over days, not minutes. The Banana model felt like an actual scene, not a chatbot reply. Sofia looked like Sofia in every image and every clip we generated from her.

The rough edges are real but small: single-choice personality traits during setup, and a Freestyle mode that does not always follow every tag you give it. Neither got in the way of actually enjoying the platform during testing.
