Your AI assistant can read your Chase balance. It just cannot touch the money. That is the JPMorgan external AI agents blocked story in one line.

JPMorgan external AI agents blocked is trending after the biggest US bank confirmed it will not let outside AI agents act on retail customer accounts. Jamie Dimon explained the call on the October 13, 2026 earnings call. Meanwhile, apps like Meta’s Muse are trying to do exactly that kind of banking work for users.

JPMorgan External AI Agents Blocked: What Changed on October 13

On its third-quarter earnings call, JPMorgan Chase drew a clear line. Outside AI agents cannot log in to customer accounts or act for retail customers.

A bank spokeswoman confirmed the position to CNBC the same day, as several outlets reported. Third parties cannot obtain a customer’s banking credentials and log in on their behalf.

Importantly, the rule covers agents built by other companies. It is not a ban on AI inside the bank. In fact, JPMorgan uses AI agents internally and plans customer-facing versions of its own.

Dimon JPMorgan AI Strategy: Rogue Agents and Liability

Dimon framed the decision as risk control. According to Fortune, he told analysts: “We’re not going to allow just any outside agent to come inside the company.”

He added a blunter warning. “You don’t want rogue agents, and there could be thousands of them,” he said, as quoted by PYMNTS.

He also raised a second issue, which PYMNTS describes as the liability transfer. In short, customers who hand an outside agent their access should understand who carries the risk. Still, Dimon said the bank is building its own tools to protect customers.

JPMorgan AI Banking Rules: What Agents Can Still Do

The block is not total. When a customer authorizes a connector such as Plaid, outside agents can still see some data in read-only form, such as balances.

However, those agents cannot send money or pay bills. According to PYMNTS, the bank also blocks unapproved screen scraping and credential sharing.

So far, JPMorgan has given no timeline for safeguards that would let agents act directly on accounts. “Protecting our customers is our top priority,” a spokesperson told Fortune.

Meta Muse and the JPMorgan External AI Agents Blocked Debate

Much of the coverage points at one product. Meta launched Muse, its personal AI agent, in September 2026 to send emails, book travel and manage calendars.

Its finance features rely on a Plaid integration. Users can connect accounts to share balances, transactions and investment holdings, according to Fortune.

Notably, Meta declined to say whether Muse could still offer financial help if more banks restrict AI agents. Crypto Briefing adds that the Muse launch raised fears agents could move deposits out of low-yield bank accounts.

AI Agents Banking: How Other Platforms Handle Outside Agents

JPMorgan is not the only company setting rules for AI agents. Here is how several platforms treat outside agents, based on the Fortune and PYMNTS reports.

Company Policy on outside AI agents Date
JPMorgan Chase No acting on retail accounts; read-only data through connectors Oct 13, 2026
Amazon Blocked Meta’s Muse shopping agent from its marketplace Sept 2026
Scalable Capital Opened to ChatGPT, Claude and Grok; users approve trades, no payments Aug 2026
Robinhood Agents use a dedicated virtual card with a customer-set limit May 2026
JPMorgan and Plaid Renewed data access deal, with pricing for the first time Sept 16, 2025

The pattern is clear. Platforms want agents on a short leash, with read-only data, spending caps or human approval for every trade.

The AI Agents JPMorgan Does Want

Interestingly, the bank is building agents of its own. CFO Jeremy Barnum said JPMorgan recently started a targeted pilot of Smart Cash, according to Crypto Briefing.

Smart Cash is meant to forecast cash flow and move funds to improve yield. In other words, it does the same kind of job an outside agent might try to do.

Barnum also linked personal AI agents to two older pressures. Deposits keep chasing higher yields, and fintechs compete on customer experience, as PYMNTS reported. As a result, control over agents is also control over customers.

What JPMorgan External AI Agents Blocked Means for Customers

For most Chase customers, nothing breaks today. Budgeting apps that read balances through approved connectors should keep working.

What you cannot do is let a third-party AI agent pay bills or move money from your account. If an app asks for your Chase password, that is exactly the pattern the bank says it does not permit.

Other banks are watching too. Let’s Data Science reports that leaders at Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs also raised AI risk on their calls. For now, however, JPMorgan is the bank that said no out loud.
