He promised a full movie by Christmas. What arrived first is seven minutes at Troy. Meet the Elon Musk AI Homer Odyssey.
The Elon Musk AI Homer Odyssey is no longer just a post on X. On October 23, xAI’s Grok Imagine released Episode 1 of an AI-made Odyssey series, and Musk shared it the next morning. Here is what the episode shows, who made it, how the feud with Christopher Nolan started and why critics are not sold.
Elon Musk AI Homer Odyssey: What Dropped on October 23
Late on Friday, October 23, the official Grok Imagine account posted the first chapter. “Watch Episode 1 of our Odyssey series made with Grok Imagine,” the post read.
A few hours later, Musk reposted it with four words: “Odyssey with Grok Imagine.” By Sunday, the two posts had passed 2.5 million and 2 million views on X.
However, this is not the movie he promised. It is the first of several planned episodes, as Mashable reported, and nobody has said how many will follow.
Grok Imagine Odyssey Episode 1: Seven Minutes at Troy
The episode runs a little over seven minutes. Rather than open with the long trip home, it starts earlier, with the Greeks arriving at Troy.
Grok Imagine is the video generator from Musk’s AI company xAI. We compare it with rivals such as Kling and Hailuo in our guide to the best AI video generators.
Still, seven minutes is long for this kind of tool. Video models generate short clips, so a piece this long depends on shot planning, continuity and the edit, AI educator Laurence Moroney wrote on X.
Who Made the Grok Imagine Odyssey
Grok did not do it alone. The post credits a creative collaboration with Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker, both known for generative AI filmmaking.
Wonder Studios promoted the release with a cheeky line: “Homer didn’t have Grok… we do.” Meanwhile, Grok Imagine asked viewers whether they want a full breakdown of how the episode was made.
That offer matters. So far, the team has not said how many clips, prompts or human editing hours went into the final cut.
The Elon Musk Odyssey Tweet That Started It
The project goes back to July 22, 2026. That day, Musk posted that Grok Imagine would make a full-length movie of The Odyssey before the end of the year.
He added that it would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.” Critics quickly noted that the poem is myth, not documented history.
As a result, the line became a running joke online. Even so, Episode 1 shows that the plan did not stay a single post.
The Elon Musk Odyssey Movie Feud With Christopher Nolan
The AI version did not come out of nowhere. Musk had spent months attacking Christopher Nolan’s live-action The Odyssey.
In February, he said Nolan had “lost his integrity,” Mashable reported. He also called the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy “an insult,” according to Khaleej Times.
Nolan’s film shrugged it off at the box office. It opened to $124.5 million in July and has grossed over $1.7 billion worldwide. Nolan himself told AFP that AI replacing human creativity is “a nonsense.”
The Elon Musk Odyssey AI Trailer Came First
Before Episode 1, there was a teaser. On August 2, Musk posted a nearly three-minute trailer captioned “Made with Grok Imagine,” Khaleej Times reported.
It showed Odysseus leaving his wife for war, fighting rough seas and meeting the Sirens. Some viewers liked the visuals but missed human emotion.
Tech creator JerryRigEverything summed up the doubters in three words: “We can tell.” Others asked whether AI could keep characters and voices consistent across a full movie.

Can Grok Finish the Full Elon Musk AI Homer Odyssey Movie?
The early reviews are rough. Mashable found the writing weak and the characters hard to tell apart. In fact, Odysseus is the only named character in the whole episode.
Visual glitches show up too, from “unnaturally perfect teeth” to hair with a “weightless, almost water-like” texture. On top of that, Musk’s track record on deadlines is shaky. MuskOmeter puts his hit rate on tracked promises at about 24 percent.
Then again, the series format buys time. If episodes keep coming, xAI can claim progress even if one feature-length film never lands by December. For context, OpenAI already pulled back on video, as our report on the Sora AI shutdown explains.
