No Windows 12, but a new job for every PC: the Microsoft Windows event AI announcements turn Windows into a home for AI agents.
The Microsoft Windows event AI announcements landed on October 7, 2026, in San Francisco. It was the first big Windows and Surface showcase in over two years. However, Microsoft did not unveil Windows 12. Instead, Satya Nadella and Nvidia chief Jensen Huang pitched local AI, a smarter Copilot and a $2,599.99 laptop. Here is everything that matters.
Microsoft Windows Event AI Announcements at a Glance
The show ran for about 70 minutes, according to the BGR live blog. Nadella shared the stage with Huang and Windows chief Pavan Davuluri. Above all, one phrase kept coming back: hybrid intelligence.
The table below sums up the main news and when each piece arrives.
| Announcement | What it is | Timing or price |
|---|---|---|
| Hybrid intelligence | Copilot uses local files, actions and models | Over the next couple of months |
| Windows Search actions | 1,000+ quick actions from the taskbar | This fall |
| Execution Containers (MXC) | Sandbox that isolates AI agents | Generally available now |
| Surface Laptop Ultra | 15-inch laptop with Nvidia RTX Spark | From $2,599.99, ships October 16 |
| Surface RTX Spark Dev Box | Desktop for AI developers | $5,999 preorder |
| Meta Muse | Personal AI agent as a native Windows app | Coming soon |
In addition, five partner laptops with the same chip opened for preorder that day.
Windows Hybrid Intelligence: Copilot Gets Local Powers
Hybrid intelligence is the core idea. In short, Windows decides whether an AI task runs on your PC or in the cloud. Microsoft says Copilot will use local context, take actions for you and tap local models.
Windows Latest breaks that into three parts. First, Copilot reads relevant files and recent activity. Second, it moves files or changes settings with your permission. Third, it mixes local and cloud compute to cut token use.
For example, one demo sorted tax documents from two folders. Then Copilot renamed them, zipped them and drafted an email to an accountant. Meanwhile, the sensitive details stayed on the laptop.
Microsoft Surface Event: Surface Laptop Ultra Price and Release Date
The hardware star was the Surface Laptop Ultra. Microsoft first showed it in June without a price. Now the numbers are official.
It starts at $2,599.99, and a higher configuration costs $3,699.99, BGR reported. Preorders opened on October 7. Furthermore, RTX Spark laptops begin shipping on Friday, October 16.
Inside sits Nvidia’s RTX Spark chip with up to 128GB of unified memory. As a result, the laptop can run very large models with no internet connection. The 15-inch machine stays under 18mm thin and comes in Platinum and Nightfall.
RTX Spark Laptops and the $5,999 Dev Box
Microsoft was not alone on stage. Huang called the result a reinvented personal computer. Moreover, five partners announced their own RTX Spark laptops.
They are the Lenovo Yoga 9n 2-in-1, Asus ProArt P14 and Dell XPS 16. The MSI Prestige N16 and HP OmniBook Ultra 16 complete the list. BGR says all five ship on October 16.
For developers, Microsoft opened preorders for the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box at $5,999. Still, buyers have options today. For instance, the MacBook Pro 16 M5 Max is a popular laptop for local models. Our Nvidia DGX Spark review covers the small desktop route.
Copilot+ PC Is Not Dead, Microsoft Says
Many people expected Microsoft to drop the Copilot+ PC label. However, Davuluri brought it back on stage. “Today, over 40% of the laptops being built for business are Copilot+ PCs,” he said, according to Windows Latest.
He added two more figures. Copilot+ PCs ship in “tens of millions” a year. They also run over 2 trillion local inferences per month.
There is a catch, though. The Surface Laptop Ultra itself does not carry the Copilot+ badge. Besides, existing Copilot+ PCs cannot run the new hybrid features yet.
Windows Search Actions and Secure AI Agents
Two quieter updates may reach more users. First, Windows Search gains actions. So you can type a request in the taskbar and Windows carries it out.
Examples include dark mode, screenshots, Bluetooth and window layouts. BGR counted more than 1,000 quick actions, due this fall.
Second, Microsoft made Execution Containers generally available. These sandboxes isolate AI agents and control what they can touch. Therefore, IT teams can see which agent did what. Meta’s Muse will also arrive as a native app, as covered in our Meta Muse AI agent report.
Microsoft Windows Event AI Announcements: What Comes Next
Timing is the open question. Microsoft says the hybrid features reach the new Copilot app over the next couple of months. It also warns that availability varies by device, market and chip.
Meanwhile, Windows 11 stays the platform. Nadella described the new Copilot as “a new OS for work”. In other words, the change arrives through updates, not a new version number.
So the Microsoft Windows event AI announcements are a bet on local AI. If the demos hold up, a PC will do real work for you without sending files to the cloud. Independent reviews after October 16 will show how close that is.
