Its makers promise under 1% false positives, yet one university counted 1,485 possible wrong flags in a single term. This Turnitin review weighs both.

Few tools decide as many grades as this one. This Turnitin review looks at the checker most colleges already pay for and asks how far its AI score deserves your trust.

Students often type the name as “turn it in”. However, it is one word and one company, and you cannot simply sign up for it.

Therefore the research behind this Turnitin review followed three questions. First, what does the software really check? Second, what does it cost a school? Finally, how accurate is the AI detector when a real essay is on the line?

What Is Turnitin?

So, what is Turnitin? It is an academic integrity platform that schools license to check student work. According to the company, it has served education since 1998.

The first product was similarity checking. It grew out of doctoral research by Berkeley students, the About page says. Today the company belongs to the Advance family of companies.

Its reach is hard to match. The homepage counts more than 16,000 institutions worldwide as partners. As a result, many students meet it long before they hear of any other checker.

What is Turnitin used for today? Mostly two jobs. It compares a paper against existing sources, and it estimates how much of the prose an AI model wrote.

Who Is It For?

The buyer is an institution, not a person. Universities, colleges and school districts sign the contract, and teachers then use it inside their learning platform.

Researchers and publishers have a separate product called iThenticate. Meanwhile, students mostly see the tool from the other side, when they upload an assignment.

It is a poor fit for a freelance writer or a single tutor. In other words, if you want to paste a text and get a score tonight, you need a different tool.

How Does Turnitin Work?

How does Turnitin work? A student submits a file through the school system, and the software builds a report for the instructor. What does Turnitin check in that report? Four parts do most of the work.

Turnitin AI Detection: The Core of This Turnitin Review

Does Turnitin check for AI? Yes, when a school has licensed and enabled the feature. The AI writing indicator sits inside the Similarity Report and links to a separate AI Writing Report.

That report shows a percentage and highlights the passages the model suspects. In addition, the guide says it flags text that an AI paraphraser or a bypasser tool has reworked.

Does Turnitin detect ChatGPT? The official FAQ lists OpenAI models from GPT-4o up to GPT-5.2 Pro. It also supports seven languages, including English, Spanish, Japanese and German.

File Rules and the Asterisk Score

Not every file gets a score. A submission needs at least 300 words of prose and no more than 30,000 words. Furthermore, it must be a .docx, .pdf, .txt or .rtf file under 100 MB.

Low scores are hidden on purpose. Since July 2024, a result between 1% and 19% appears as an asterisk with no number. Turnitin says this reduces the chance of false positives.

Turnitin Clarity Review: Seeing the Writing Process

Clarity is the newest piece, and the homepage leads with it. It combines writing analytics with AI insights, so a teacher can see how a paper took shape.

The product page shows an AI assistant with guardrails, suggested prompts and a count of active writing time. Consequently, the focus moves from catching students to watching the process.

Similarity Report and iThenticate

The Turnitin plagiarism checker is still the foundation. It matches a paper against web pages, published articles and earlier student work, then shows the overlaps side by side.

For researchers, iThenticate does a similar job. Its page cites 54 billion current and archived web pages and 244 million subscription content sources. Because of this depth, text matching remains the strongest part of the platform.

Turnitin Review in Practice: Is Turnitin AI Detector Accurate?

Is Turnitin AI detector accurate? The company gives a careful answer. It aims to keep false positives under 1% for documents with more than 20% AI writing.

Moreover, it says it tests each model update on over 700,000 papers written before ChatGPT existed. However, the same FAQ admits the detector may miss some AI text to keep that rate low.

So how accurate is Turnitin AI detector at scale? Washington State University did the math. In February 2026 its provost published a memo cancelling the AI detection contract.

The memo counts 148,547 assessments scanned in fall 2024. Even at a 1% error rate, that means almost 1,485 papers could be flagged as AI when they were not.

There is a human cost as well. According to the memo, 33% of AI hearing cases from 2023 to 2025 ended in a finding of not responsible. In those cases, a detector score was the only evidence.

Is Turnitin accurate, then? For matching copied text, yes. For AI writing, this Turnitin review treats the percentage as a reason to talk, not as a verdict. Its own guide says the same.

Turnitin Pricing Review: Is Turnitin Free?

The company does not publish a price list. Therefore every figure in this Turnitin review comes from contract records that CalMatters and The Markup reported in June 2025.

Plan Price
Cal State system, plagiarism detector $2.59 per student, then $2.71 the next year
Cal State system, with the AI upgrade First offered at $3.05 and $3.19 per student
CUNY, 2021-22 $1.79 per student, the lowest figure in the records
UC Irvine continuing education, 2021-22 $6.50 per student, the highest figure in the records

Is Turnitin free? No. Schools license it through contracts, and the price is negotiated case by case. Students and individual teachers cannot buy their own account.

The spread is wide. In the same records, one buyer paid more than three times the rate of another. Meanwhile, Cal State spent over $6 million on the tool in seven years.

Smaller schools should expect less leverage. For example, a July 2026 guide from Working Educators puts typical K-12 contracts at $3 to $5 per student per year.

Turnitin vs GPTZero: Which AI Detector Is Closest to Turnitin?

Many students ask which AI detector is closest to Turnitin, because they cannot test their own work in it. No public tool uses the same model, so no score will match exactly.

GPTZero is the nearest in purpose. It also targets classrooms, highlights suspect sentences and offers a free plan that works in a browser. Our GPTZero test and verdict covers its accuracy in detail.

Still, treat any second check as a rough guide. Two detectors often disagree on the same essay, and neither result proves who wrote it.

Is Turnitin Legit? What This Review Checked

Is Turnitin legit? Yes. It is an established company with a long record, thousands of institutional customers and a corporate owner in Advance.

The open questions are about use, not about fraud. The WSU memo lists six large research universities that have banned the AI detector in integrity cases. Among them are UC Berkeley, Michigan State and the University of Washington.

In addition, the memo raises a transparency issue. The AI report is visible to instructors and not to students. As a result, a student cannot spot a problem before the teacher does.

Turnitin Review: Alternatives Worth Comparing

Turnitin vs GPTZero

GPTZero is open to anyone and free for occasional checks. It adds Writing Replay, which plays back how a Google Doc was typed.

Choose it when you teach without a school license, or when you want a second opinion.

Turnitin vs Undetectable AI

Undetectable AI is a humanizer first, with a detector that checks a draft against several engines. Our Undetectable AI test explains where that helps and where it does not.

However, it is a writing tool, not a grading tool. It cannot tell you what a school report will show.

Turnitin vs QuillBot

QuillBot bundles a free AI detector with a paraphraser and a grammar checker. Our QuillBot review rated the detector as a second opinion only.

Notably, Turnitin names QuillBot in its own guide as an example of an AI paraphrasing tool it tries to catch.

Turnitin Review Scorecard: Where It Excels and Where It Falls Short

Pros

  • Similarity checking draws on a very large database of web pages, articles and student papers
  • AI writing detection sits inside the same report teachers already use, with no extra upload
  • Scores between 1% and 19% are hidden behind an asterisk to limit false positives
  • The official guide states the AI score should not be the sole basis for action against a student
  • Clarity adds writing process analytics, which is stronger evidence than a percentage
  • Supports AI detection in seven languages and works inside common learning platforms

Cons

  • Individuals cannot buy it, so students have no way to check their own work in advance
  • No public price list, and contract records show rates from $1.79 to $6.50 per student
  • Washington State University estimated almost 1,485 possible false flags in one term at a 1% error rate
  • The AI report is instructor facing only, so students cannot see or question it first
  • Several large research universities have banned or cancelled the AI detector

Turnitin Review Verdict: Is It Worth It?

For plagiarism, yes. The Similarity Report is mature, widely trusted and backed by a database few rivals can match.

For AI writing, only with care. The vendor claims a low error rate, yet the totals grow fast across a whole campus. Consequently, a score alone should never decide a case.

The short answer from this Turnitin review: keep the plagiarism checker and treat the AI percentage as a question. Above all, schools that pay for it should look at Clarity. A process record shows the work, while a detector only guesses at it.
