Open AI Dev Day 2026 Recap: Everything OpenAI Announced

Open AI Dev Day 2026 took place on September 29 at Fort Mason in San Francisco, with Sam Altman opening the keynote at 10 a.m. Pacific. In total, OpenAI packed more than 20 launches into the day. This recap covers each big one: what it does, what it costs and who gets it first.

In short, OpenAI pushed in two directions at once. It made its models cheaper for builders, and it made its top ChatGPT plans far more expensive for power users.

The new model is GPT-6.1 Sol. Specifically, OpenAI pitches it as close to GPT-6 Astra in capability while costing about 20% of Astra’s token price. Above all, it is tuned for agentic coding and computer use.

According to BGR’s rundown of the DevDay announcements, that price cut is the headline for developers. BenchLM lists the API rate at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. In addition, cached input reads drop to $0.10 per million, a 95% discount for agents that repeat the same context.

Equally important, speed now has its own price tag. The Ultrafast tier runs up to eight times faster in Codex and up to six times faster in the API. However, it costs six times the standard rate. Similarly, a cheaper Fast mode sits in between, at roughly double the speed for double the price.

At first, Ultrafast launches for Astra on the new Pro 500 plan and on Enterprise. Pro 500 costs $500 per month and gives 25 times the usage of ChatGPT Plus. Meanwhile, BGR reports that new $200 Pro subscribers drop from 20x to 10x Plus usage, while existing subscribers keep 20x.

In contrast, the biggest consumer launch was dots. Namely, these always-on agents run on GPT-6 Astra, get their own cloud computer and keep working toward your goals after you close the tab. We cover them in depth in our Open AI Dots explainer.

ChatGPT Space is the team side of the same idea. In other words, it is a shared hub where colleagues and their dots work on the same projects. Right now, it is live for Pro, Business and Enterprise on desktop and web. On mobile, however, you can only view and share for now. OpenAI also showed Pages, a document editor that people and dots edit together.

Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent, now runs fully in the cloud. As a result, a task you start on a laptop can keep going and pick up on another device. Currently, it is available on Plus, Pro, Business, Education, Healthcare and Enterprise plans. The command-line tool also accepts voice instructions now, BGR notes.

Additionally, two security tools shipped alongside it. Codex Security Cloud scans code for vulnerabilities and proposes verified fixes, with GitHub support live and GitLab in preview. Likewise, Code Review follows the same split. For developers building their own agents, the new Agents API entered public beta with managed sessions, memory, multi-agent controls and computer use.

Next, OpenAI wants ChatGPT to follow you into other apps. With Sign in with ChatGPT, Plus and Pro subscribers can log in to 16 partner tools at launch, including Notion, Vercel and Devin. Plugin extensions go further and let developers ship full editors and dashboards that live inside ChatGPT and Codex.

Finally, on privacy, Altman previewed OpenAI Private Intelligence. First, it stores safety records in storage the customer controls. Second, Private Inference is due in fall 2026. Beyond that, ChatGPT now suggests plugins on its own during a conversation, Engadget reported.

The keynote was not flawless. For instance, a voice chat demo with a dot failed on stage, and other agent tests stalled while the audience waited. Still, OpenAI used the stage to claim 1.2 billion weekly ChatGPT users, according to Engadget.
