He started coding as a teenager and ran Google for a decade. Now the Eric Schmidt AI programming future comes down to four words: my field is over.
The Eric Schmidt AI programming future view got blunt this week. On the Inside Blackstone podcast, published September 29, 2026, the former Google CEO said AI now writes code he could never match. However, he still wants young people to learn coding. In his view, the job has moved from building software to designing it.
Eric Schmidt AI Programming Future: My Field Is Over
Schmidt, now 71, spoke with Christine Anderson, Blackstone’s global head of corporate affairs. She asked whether an AI productivity boom is coming. He answered that it is already underway.
Then he used himself as the example. According to the Blackstone transcript, he said he was a very, very good programmer at 22. He added, with a joke at his own expense, that he was one of the best according to himself.
After that came the line that spread. My field is over, he said. For a man with 55 years in tech, that is a striking thing to admit.
What Eric Schmidt Said About Programmers and AI Code
The detail matters more than the headline. Schmidt said he looks at the code AI writes today and cannot write that code himself. He could not have done it at 22 either.
So he got beaten, he said, and beaten hard. Still, he sounded relaxed about it. It’s okay, he told Anderson, because he did fine.
He also named the tools behind the shift. Specifically, he pointed to Claude Code, OpenAI Codex and future products from Google. All of them let him say what he wants, and then the code gets written. We track those products in our guide to the best AI coding tools.
Why Schmidt Still Tells People to Learn Coding
Anderson pushed back on the gloomy part. After all, Schmidt still tells people to learn coding. He agreed, and gave a reason.
He wants them to be architects. In the past, he said, he had to build the house. Now he can architect the house and let the AI tools do the building.
As a result, he expects the next generation of people like him to be architects. They will be very smart, he said, and they will know how to say what they want. In other words, the skill shifts from typing code to describing the result clearly.
Will AI Replace Programmers in 2026? What the Numbers Show
Schmidt did not give a job-loss number on the podcast. However, Business Insider added two data points to his remarks.
First, it cited Daytona, a 30-person AI startup. According to its CEO Ivan Burazin, 16 engineers there each manage an average of five AI agents. Second, it noted that Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao has said Claude Code writes more than 90% of the company’s code.
Because of this, the question of whether AI will replace programmers looks different in practice. The typing is going to the machine. Meanwhile, the people who remain direct the agents and check the results.
Eric Schmidt AI Prediction: Agents That Work Overnight
Schmidt told a story about a friend who now spends his mornings with what he calls his agent friends. The friend gives the agents a one-hour project over lunch. Then, at five o’clock, he hands them an overnight task.
The work typically finishes between two and four in the morning. As a result, he wakes up knowing a result is waiting.
Schmidt wants companies to run the same way. He described an AI-native CEO with agents watching security, power, cash, products and global macro around the clock. He also called long reasoning the single AI theme he would invest in.
| Topic | What Schmidt said | His timeframe |
|---|---|---|
| Writing code | AI writes code he cannot match | Now |
| Productivity boom | Already underway | Now |
| Long reasoning | AI can reason for about eight hours | Arrived in the last year |
| Einstein-level discovery | Not possible yet | Maybe in a decade |
| Fusion energy | The best energy fix for AI | Three to five years |
| AI data centers | About 11% of US electricity demand | By 2030 |
Eric Schmidt AI Programming Future vs the San Francisco Consensus
Schmidt is not predicting runaway AI next year. In fact, he argued against what he calls the San Francisco Consensus. That is the belief that AI will make true scientific leaps within two years.
He does not agree. For one thing, he said there are not enough computers, people or algorithms yet. Instead, he guessed such leaps might come in a decade, or in his lifetime.
His test is simple. Could a computer take everything known in 1902 and produce Einstein’s relativity? The consensus today is no. So the Eric Schmidt AI programming future is about code first, not about machines that out-think physicists.
What to Study Now: Deep Reasoning
Anderson closed with a parent’s question. What should young people study today? Schmidt said he used to answer biology. Now he says deep reasoning.
For non-technical people, his advice was to use AI tools to scale whatever they care about. For technical people, he said to use the same tools to invent things that change the world.
He added that he has never seen the cost of entry so low. Therefore, the only limits are curiosity and a willingness to take risks. Not everyone will have a huge impact, he admitted, but some will.

Frequently Asked Questions
What did Eric Schmidt say about the future of programming?
Schmidt said his field is over. On the Inside Blackstone podcast, he explained that AI now writes code he could not write, even at his peak at 22.
Does Eric Schmidt think people should still learn to code?
Yes. However, his reason has changed. He wants people to become architects who tell AI tools exactly what to build, instead of writing every line by hand.
Will AI replace programmers in 2026?
Nobody gave a firm number. Still, Business Insider reports that Anthropic says Claude Code writes more than 90% of its code, while engineers at Daytona manage about five AI agents each.
Which AI coding tools did Eric Schmidt mention?
He named Claude Code and OpenAI Codex. In addition, he mentioned future products from Google. All of them let a user describe the goal while the tool writes the code.
When does Eric Schmidt expect superintelligence?
Later than Silicon Valley does. Specifically, he rejects the two-year San Francisco Consensus and says real discovery by AI may take about a decade.
What does Eric Schmidt tell young people to study?
Deep reasoning is his answer now. Previously, he recommended biology. He also urges both technical and non-technical people to use AI tools to scale their ideas.
